Will my insurance cover care from Lerman & Son?

Lerman & Son accepts most insurance. We will verify your coverage before services rendered and notify of benefits allowable.

Will I see the same Lerman & Son practitioner each time I visit the office? Will my assigned practitioner come to see me if I am hospitalized?

Yes. You will be teamed with a practitioner to meet your rehabilitation needs. We find that continuity of care is appreciated and we routinely see patients in the hospitals. We will work collaboratively with hospital staff to coordinate your care.

How can I be seen for an evaluation?

A prescription is needed from your physician and then you may call our office for an evaluation.

Do I need a prescription for my orthosis/prosthesis?

Yes. For all Orthotic or Prosthetic care a physician's prescription is required.

How long does it take to have an orthosis/prosthesis made after my initial visit?

Usually, we can have a custom orthosis made in one to three weeks after measurement. Many custom fit products can be fit the same day. Because we fabricate almost everything in our lab we are able to expedite our service when needed.

What should I bring to my appointment or my child's appointment?

Bring the current orthosis/prosthesis even if you or your child have outgrown it or it is damaged. The patient must be present for all appointments, including adjustments. For scoliosis treatment, please make sure you bring your latest x-rays or that they have been reviewed by your practitoner prior to your visit. Also, bring your current insurance information and/or prescription if new devices are needed.

What should I do if the fit or function of my orthosis or prosthesis changes?

You will be seen for routine follow-up as instructed by your practitioner and you can always contact us for non-interval follow-up needs.

What should I do if I experience functional difficulty with my orthosis/prosthesis?

Contact our office immediately.

Should I repair or adjust my orthosis or prosthesis myself?

No. This can lead to possible damage to you or your device.

Can I get my hard plastic orthosis wet?

Yes. However it should be cleaned and dried thoroughly before you reapply it. If it comes in contact with salt water be sure to rinse it with fresh water. Be aware that padding inside of some braces can develop mildew if not properly dried.

What should I do if the Velcro straps on my orthosis break?

Contact your orthotist as soon as possible. Often no appointment is needed for strap changes as they can be replaced easily.

Should I make a pre-surgical appointment if I am having an amputation soon?

If you have concerns about prosthetic care you should not hesitate to make an appointment. Much of the concern experienced before an amputation is due to not knowing what to expect afterwards. A pre-surgical visit may answer your questions and significantly minimize uncertainty.

How soon will I be ambulatory following an amputation?

This may individually vary depending on your health and physical ability, most patients work on transferring from bed and getting around with crutches or walkers in the first few days following amputation surgery.

How soon will I have my prosthesis?

This may vary depending on your particular situation. The most important factor is how fast the limb heals. Often the healing process may be slower than desired. Sometimes the surgeon will request a post-operative cast to be applied in the operating room. In some cases the post-operative cast is applied to prevent limb contractures and to protect the surgical site. The first prosthesis is applied several weeks following suture removal.

How functional will I be after I receive my prosthesis?

Most people have very few limitations with a prosthesis. Your prosthetist and physical therapist will assist you in reaching your many goals.

Can you recommend an amputee support group or peer interaction for me?

Yes. We often arrange for new amputees to speak with other amputees. We can direct you to support groups in your area and also to organizations like the ACA(Amputee Coaliton of America).

Can I play sports in my orthosis or prosthesis?

Yes, as directed by your physician.

What if my skin is red after I remove my orthosis or prosthesis?

Minimal redness is expected with both orthosis and prosthesis wear. However, if you experience redness or irritation lasting longer than 30 minutes after removing the device contact your orthotist or prosthetist.

Can the alignment of my prosthesis be changed as my activity level changes?

Yes. It is expected that the alignment of your prosthesis will change over time. This normally occurs with a new amputee as he/she adjusts to the prosthesis and becomes more active.

Can the components of my prosthesis be replaced(knee, ankle, foot) liners and or socks?

Components can be changed with most prostheses. A new prescription is required.

Can I get my prosthesis wet?

Most prostheses are NOT compatible with water unless they have been specifically designed for water activity. Doing so may void all manufacturer warranties.

What kind of shoes should I wear with my orthosis or prosthesis?

We recommend athletic or standard heel height type shoes. Although most shoes can be worn as long as they fit both the brace and your foot. Do not change the heel height of the shoe as it may effect the function of the brace unless you discuss changes with our office.
